As a former patient, or family member of a patient, who has received care at our Waco hospital, you've personally experienced the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Hillcrest difference. Putting the patient at the heart of everything we do enables us to create an experience that mirrors the type of care we would want to receive if we were a patient. That's our secret to success.

If you or a family member has received care at Baylor Scott & White – Hillcrest in the past five years, you're qualified to apply to become a Patient and Family Adviser in Waco. That's all we require. We will provide any other training that you may need.

What is a patient and family adviser?

We've created this special role to provide a voice that represents all patients and families who receive care at Baylor Scott & White – Hillcrest. Using your knowledge and insights as a former patient, you'll partner with members of our team—physicians, nurses and administrators—to help improve the quality and safety of the personal, individualized care we provide in Waco.

As the voice of the patient and family, the patient and family adviser has specific responsibilities:

  • A desire to help the hospital improve the quality and safety of care.
  • A willingness to provide feedback based on your experience as a patient or family member.
  • A commitment to help us plan and implement care improvements.
  • The ability to volunteer your time for short or long-term projects—between one and four hours per month.

Is being a patient and family adviser right for you?

Being a patient and family adviser may be a good match with your skills and experiences if:

  • You are willing to share your experiences as a patient or family member in an effort to improve the overall patient experience for others.
  • You provide feedback about the good things that happened during your hospital stay, as well as, the things that could benefit from improvements.
  • You enjoy working with a diverse group of people and a diverse group of opinions.
  • You are willing to listen to others and think about what they are saying without judging them, even when you disagree.
  • You can work as an effective team member with a positive attitude.
  • You can commit to keeping information you may hear as a Patient and Family Adviser private and confidential.

You may be asked to serve in a variety of ways

If you are selected to become a patient and family adviser for Baylor Scott & White – Hillcrest, you can look forward to a variety of potential assignments:

  • Sharing your patient story and experience with physicians, clinicians, staff and other patients.
  • Serving on a committee with other advisers to provide input for ways to improve in a specific area.
  • Serving on a hospital or clinical committee with physicians, nurses and others to be the constant voice of the patient and family and to represent how issues may be viewed from the patient's perspective.
