BSWRI brings together the critical infrastructure and operational resources needed to safely, and effectively, conduct innovative patient-centered research across the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Texas.
Our diverse portfolio of patient-facing research and clinical trials ensures that innovation and education stays at the forefront of our care.
Any person, regardless of title or position, who participates in the design, coordination, conduct, or reporting of research on behalf of Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) or any of its Controlled Affiliates must follow the BSWH Policy on Financial Conflict of Interest in Research.
More than 600 research team members work at bespoke BSWRI research centers, as well as through programs led by research teams at hospitals and clinics throughout the Baylor Scott & White Health System.
In addition to the above programs, BSWRI conducts research at multiple hospitals and clinics throughout the Baylor Scott & White Health system.
Baylor Scott & White Research Institute Scientific Research Cores are dedicated to facilitating basic, clinical and translational research by fostering collaboration among researchers and the larger scientific and clinical community. The Scientific Research Cores provide access to state-of-the-art research tools, instruments, technologies, services, training and expert consultation for investigators, optimizing the quality and efficiency of research.
Classified as a Bio Safety Level 2 lab (BSL-2) enabling handling of agents associated with human diseases (i.e., pathogenic or infections organisms)
CATDAD core lab is dedicated to advancing cancer drug discovery, precision medicine, and the development of cutting-edge aptamer technologies
The CICL offers independent third-party analysis and interpretation of echocardiographic images for industry-sponsored and investigator-led clinical trials
Provides all flow cytometry cell analysis and cell sorting services
Enables work such as DNA/RNA extraction and sequencing
Certified by the federal government for accuracy and reproducibility, this core lab is critical for clinical trial monitoring
The Biostatistics core at BSWRI has developed novel statistical software for biostatistics and bioinformatics research. We aim to provide the biomedical community with free tools covering broad research areas, including statistical methodologies, high-throughput data analysis, computational biology, and systems biology.
The Clinical Data and Analytics (Tissue Bank) Department was established in 2004 to provide statistical support to clinical and research staff. The staff consult with investigators and the IRB on study design and provide study results. Additionally, they support data management on specimens and data form design.
The Tissue Bank is most beneficial to the PI when engaged before the study or experiment is designed. Tissue Bank staff meet with investigators in the early stages of the development of a research study to discuss the design, including estimating required sample size, storage protocols and the statistical methodology to be used in the study data.
Data managers also consent patients, allowing for the collection and storage of their tissue. Completed forms are keyed into a secure database, and the keyed data is passed through several quality assurance steps to ensure completeness and accuracy of study data.
Staff perform data analysis and compile written reports describing the analyses. For peer-reviewed articles, statistical sections to describe the study design and analysis methods are provided.
The Texas Immuno-Oncology Biorepository (TIOB) is a facility that collects, catalogs and stores samples of biological material, such as urine, blood, stool, tissue, cells, DNA, RNA and protein, from humans for laboratory research in an effort to improve our understanding of cancer.
The TIOB specializes in maintaining a portfolio of well-defined and well-annotated serial biospecimens from patients with cancer and those considered at high risk for developing certain cancers, as well as those patients already being treated with standard of care and novel immunotherapeutics.

Excellence In Peripheral Artery Disease (XLPAD) is an observational study designed to evaluate the effectiveness and use of stent and non-stent based therapies among peripheral artery disease (PAD) patients.
The study will create a registry that will include entry of procedural and clinical follow-up information into an online data collection software, REDCap.
The Clinical Trials Office (CTO) serves as a comprehensive resource for initiating and conducting clinical trials for physicians and other investigators on the medical staff at Baylor Scott & White hospitals and research centers. The office encourages research and assists investigators and representatives of the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and device industries in navigating the complex research arena.
Investigators may conduct clinical trials through the CTO while maintaining responsibility for the project, or the CTO can provide specific services tailored to an investigator’s individual needs.

Baylor Scott & White Research Institute collaborates with physicians, investigators, staff and external parties, such as pharmaceutical companies, universities and government entities, to identify and realize research business opportunities.
Our dedicated technology transfer service also helps to evaluate, patent, market and license technology developed through BSWRI by our researchers and inventors, as well as through collaborations with third-party companies, investors and entrepreneurs and collegial alliances.
Baylor Scott & White Research Institute has a dedicated team of contracts and budget resources to help manage pre- and post-award activities and negotiations with sponsors. The contract process is facilitated by Baylor Scott & White Research Institute.
The contracts’ team core function is to coordinate negotiations and amendments to ensure they are initiated in a timely and efficient manner, and in line with Baylor Scott & White’s procedures and processes.
The budget process is carried out by a Research Project Analyst, and that person's key objective is to develop and negotiate budgets for all industry studies.
The grants team assists investigators with the submission of research grants to external funding agencies. They provide administrative support by ensuring the timely and accurate submission of grant applications to external entities.

The regulatory office enhances regulatory compliance in accordance with internal and external guidelines and assist investigators and research staff in the preparation and submission of study related regulatory documents.
Prior to study initiation and throughout the course of the study, the Regulatory Office provides administrative support by ensuring the completion and proper filing of appropriate IRB submissions and required regulatory documentation to all external entities.
This award-winning journal contains a mixture of articles and features, including original research, reviews, historical articles, editorials, case studies and book reviews. Submissions are welcome.
