Minimally invasive heart valve surgery—maximum results

Although medications may be used to treat the symptoms of heart valve disease, like a leaky heart valve, they cannot cure it. The most effective heart valve treatments are the repair or replacement of malfunctioning heart valves.

Both minimally invasive valve surgery and open-heart surgery are used to repair or replace heart valves here in Plano. The majority of valve repairs, however, are performed as a minimally invasive procedure that can include those with minimal incisions and possible robotic assistance. Transcatheter (MitraClip®) procedures for mitral valve repair are also possible and have been effectively used with positive outcomes.

These types of interventional procedures for heart valves usually result in less scarring, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery for most cardiovascular patients.

Specializing in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)

Heart patients who need an aortic valve replacement but are considered high risk for open-heart surgery can now be treated with a minimally invasive procedure known as transcatheter aortic valve replacement, also called TAVR. Having participated in the early clinical trials of the TAVR procedure, the Plano heart experts here helped improve the technology now used around the country.

TAVR is less invasive than open-heart surgery and involves making a small incision in the upper leg through the femoral artery where heart surgeons use advanced imaging technology to guide thin tubes (catheters) up toward the aortic valve and replace it with a new one.
