Why heart screening matters

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a life-threatening condition where the heart abruptly stops functioning—often in young people who seem to be otherwise healthy. It requires immediate, lifesaving care within minutes. In young people, SCA is often caused by a heart condition that has gone undetected.

The tests included in the Living for Zachary Heart Screening can detect heart abnormalities and conditions that put students at risk for SCA. Conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), long QT syndrome or other rhythm disorders may not cause any symptoms before SCA occurs.

By identifying these conditions early, families and physicians can take steps to treat the cause and prevent tragedy. A simple screening can make all the difference.

Heart conditions detected through screening

The Living for Zachary Heart Screening can identify heart abnormalities that may be linked to a higher risk of sudden cardiac arrest in young people. Many of these conditions have no warning signs, can go undetected even with standard checkups or sports physicals, and happen in people who have no family history.

Some of the conditions detected through the screening include:

• Brugada syndrome
• Coronary artery anomalies (CAA)
• Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM)
• Long QT syndrome, a type of arrhythmia
• Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome

These conditions are rare but serious, which is why early detection is so important. Most youth who have a Living for Zachary Heart Screening have results that show no cause for concern. But when a potential issue is found, our cardiology team provides the next steps and guidance for follow-up care to monitor or treat the condition.

Who should get screened

Sudden cardiac arrest and undetected heart conditions can affect any young person. The Living for Zachary Heart Screening is open to all youth ages 12–22, whether or not they play organized sports. Screening is strongly recommended for:

• Student athletes or physically active teens
• Youth with a family history of heart disease or unexplained fainting
• Teens who have never had a heart screening before

Even if your child has no symptoms, a simple screening can help identify hidden risks. For those without any symptoms, the Living for Zachary program recommends screening every three years.
